The Department of Geology of Yashwantrao Chavan College of Science, Karad, was established in June 1963. It is the only department in Satara and Sangli districts for studying the Geology subject. The geology laboratory is well equipped with geological instruments and possesses a good collection of minerals, rock specimens, crystal models, fossil specimens, and microscopes. The departmental library has a good collection of books and research journals. More than 500 books in our central library from various branches of the earth sciences.In a span of about 60 years, the department has imparted teaching for students not only to its native districts but also to many other districts of Maharashtra like Sangali, Kolhapur, Raigad, Nagpur, Gadchiroli, etc. Many of our past students are professionally well placed in various government and non-government geological, as well as non-geological organizations all over the globe. The staff members actively participate in various state, national, and international conferences, seminars, and workshops.The department aims to study and monitor earth processes and geo-resources such as minerals, oil, and water while extending the results of these efforts to the benefit of the students and society and preparing students for careers in the fields of geoscience. The department endorses the concept of smart teaching using online pedagogy, green or white boards, 3D models, animations, surprise tests, seminars, projects, extensive fieldwork, etc. to enable students to be at the forefront of education and research internationally.We provide a wide range of knowledge covering from foundation to recent methods and problems, both in the laboratory and in the field, in different aspects of geology, including geomorphology, mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, sedimentology, stratigraphy, paleontology, hydrogeology, remote sensing and GIS, environmental geology, geophysics, and economic geology. Department of Geology organizes expert talks, science seminar and workshops to enhance knowledge of student related to earth sciences.
