The Zoology Department at Yashwantrao Chavan College of Science, Karad, has epitomized academic excellence since its inception in June 1958. Gradually expanding its offerings since its establishment at the principal level in June 1966, the department has transformed into a hub for comprehensive education, catering to students from XI to B.Sc. III levels. The academic curriculum saw further enrichment with the introduction of M. Phil. studies in 2007, although this program is now discontinued by UGC. In 2013, the department took pride in launching the Ph.D. course, underscoring its commitment to advanced academic pursuits. The faculty members have received due recognition for their valuable contributions. Presently, the department actively supports Ph.D. candidates under the guidance of our research guides, as well as those from affiliated institutes of Shivaji University Kolhapur.

The department's dedication to scientific advancement is evident through its meticulously curated museum, which showcases rare animal specimens and plastic-embedded specimens, its unique collection in deparatment. Since 1977, an operational animal house has enhanced the practical learning experience for students, although it is now closed due to UGC terms. Additionally, the department accommodates a dedicated library. Furthermore, the 'Eagle Nature Club,' affiliated with WWF-India since 1989, further exemplifies the department's dedication to environmental awareness. Recognized as the 'Best Nature Club' in 2008, the club oversees projects in Vermicomposting since 1999, offering consultancy services to local farmers. The department actively contributes to the community by delivering lectures on Vermicomposting to local farmers and school students in the tehsil.

Research Laboratory Facilities: Our research laboratory is equipped with cutting-edge technology to support advanced scientific investigations. We offer a comprehensive suite of instruments including a Digital computer microscope, Spectrophotometer, Photomicrography unit, Microtome, field photography units featuring advanced telephoto lenses, and a research microscope equipped with a trinocular head. Additionally, our laboratory is fully equipped for molecular research, boasting state-of-the-art instruments such as horizontal and vertical gel electrophoresis setups complete with a power pack, a trans-illuminator, and a micro-centrifuge. With a steadfast dedication to pioneering research, this department has contributed significantly to the scientific community, resulting in numerous published research papers authored by our esteemed faculty members.
